ZENDEH has gone from strength to strength since being based in the North East of England. ZENDEH produces high quality cross art form productions with creative engagement programmes that are culturally eclectic, unforgettable and attract new audiences.
From April 2012, ZENDEH will join Arts Council England's National Portfolio. Our programme from 2012 -2015 will include creative engagement residencies, site specific performances, workshops, artistic laboratories and online activity around the following productions:
FLOCK (2011 - 2013)
Iran 1921, two brothers and their sister in the midst of social and political upheavel, are brought together at their beloved Mother deathbed. Her last blessing is that they go in search of their long lost Father. Their guide across Iran is a mysterious kind stranger. A potent and thought provoking tale inspired by the poem The Conference of the Birds by Farid Attar.
HEART (2012 - 2014)
A love affair between Iran and India. The year is 1953, Layli must survive Majnoon's all consuming love. Set against a back drop of a world coming to terms with a post world war landscape. Inspired by Nezami's poem Layli & Majnoon whose fragrant echoes infused the much loved Romeo & Juliet.
LAUGHTER (2013 - 2015)
Three generations of women scattered across borders are compelled to gather one last time under the same roof in Iran 1979. From dusk til dawn to peel truths, cook secrets, and stir up desires. Inspired by the rich and evocative tales of the one thousand and one nights that continue to unravel across continents.
The ZENDEH Philosophy
ZENDEH recognises that each artist is diverse. ZENDEH seeks artistic quality by engaging with ideas of origins, inherited cultural identity, experiences of trans-nationals and the need for a diaspora to belong as well as simultaneously to be a nomad. The freedom to explore these ideas are our human right, it is what guides us through the global and local socio-political tides of change, enabling ZENDEH to make great art for everyone.
